What is a root canal treatment?

Root Canal Treatment, Root Treatment or Root Filling, whatever you choose to call it – it doesn’t have the best reputation, but there really is nothing better than your own teeth.

A root canal treatment is one of the ways to treat an infected or painful tooth so you can keep it healthy and comfortable for years to come. That’s why here at The Dentists of Didsbury we endeavour to provide you with the latest in AI -assisted technology as well as high magnification to provide you with successful treatment to get your teeth healthy again so you can get back to doing what you do best.

Inside each tooth is a tiny space that holds the nerve and blood supply — called the pulp. If bacteria reach this area (often due to decay, a crack, a leaking old filling or dental trauma), it can cause pain and an infection.

Root canal treatment gently removes that infection, cleans and seals the space, and restores the tooth to a healthier state. Root treated teeth can weaken so for this reason, it’s often recommended that a crown or onlay be provided to restore the integrity of the tooth and enable the root treated tooth to function normally again and for the long term.

Signs you might need root canal treatment

If you notice any of the following, book an appointment with our friendly team here at The Dentists of Didsbury:

  • Sensitivity to hot or cold that lingers for over half an hour

  • Spontaneous sensitivity or an ache that doesn’t go away, gradually worsening

  • Pain when chewing or biting on a specific tooth

  • Swelling or tenderness in the gum

  • A tooth that’s darkened in colour

Even if you’re not in pain, sometimes we can find an infection early during an assessment or by taking an X-ray.

What happens during a root canal?

We’ll always talk you through every step before we start.

Here’s what happens during a typical root canal appointment at The Dentists of Didsbury:

  1. We gently numb your tooth so you feel no pain at all.

  2. We remove the infection from inside the tooth using fine instruments.

  3. We clean and disinfect the canals to remove bacteria and clear infection.

  4. We fill and seal the root space to prevent reinfection.

  5. We restore the tooth with a strong filling or a custom-made crown or onlay for protection.

Most root canal treatments take one or two visits, depending on the extent of the infection.

Does root canal treatment hurt?

No, because we use modern techniques and effective local anaesthetic to make sure your treatment is completely pain-free.

In fact, most patients say it feels very similar to having a regular filling — and it’s often a huge relief from the toothache they’ve been experiencing.

After your treatment

Once your root canal is complete, your tooth should feel comfortable and function as normal.

To help it last, we’ll usually recommend protecting it with a dental crown or onlay, especially for back teeth that do more heavy chewing.

With good brushing, flossing and regular mouth health reviews, a root-treated tooth can last for many, many years.
