What Are Dentures?

Dentures are bespoke-made removable appliances that replace missing teeth. They are of 2 types – full dentures and partial dentures.

Full dentures (also called complete dentures) are tailored replacements for all the teeth in your upper or lower jaw — or both jaws — designed and crafted to restore function and appearance.

Partial dentures are similar in that they are designed and produced to restore the function and appearance of some missing teeth, supported by the remaining natural teeth.

With modern materials and custom design, they’re made to provide a durable option to replace your missing teeth and to look as natural as possible. Supporting your lips, cheeks and to help maintain your face shape.

Why Might You Choose Dentures?

You might be considering dentures if:

  • You’ve lost or are about to lose all or most of your teeth.

  • Your remaining teeth aren’t strong or healthy enough to support other treatments like fixed bridge-work; or you’re unsuitable for dental implants.

  • You want to enjoy the ability to eat, smile and speak with confidence again.

Here at The Dentists of Didsbury, we believe in Dentistry with a Conscience: providing preventative advice, recommending treatments that are in your nest interests and designed to treat you as a person, not just your teeth — our aim is always to find the solution that fits your lifestyle and goals.

The Denture Journey

01

Initial Consultation

We’ll sit down with you in a relaxed setting, listen to your concerns and aims of treatment, carry out a full assessment (and any needed scans or moulds) and discuss whether dentures are the best option for you. No pressure — just honest advice.

02

Impressions & Planning

Once we decide together that dentures are appropriate, we’ll take detailed impressions of your mouth so the new dentures will fit well as well as looking great. You’ll help choose the colour, shape and style of your new teeth. Our state-of-the-art clinic in Didsbury means we use modern techniques for maximum comfort and accuracy.

03

Trial Smile

On liaising with our expert dental technicians, we’ll invite you to test drive your new dentures. Checking the fit, form and function, ensuring you’re happy to proceed with processing to the definitive appliance materials.

04

Fitting & Fine-Tuning

When your dentures are ready, we’ll fit them, check how you look, eat and speak, and make any adjustments needed. It’s normal for your mouth to take a little time to get used to the new feel — and we’ll be with you every step of the way.

Getting Comfortable with Your New Dentures

It can take a little time to adapt to your new dentures, even if you’ve been a denture-wearer for years. You might notice small changes in how you eat or speak initially. With patience and practice — and our support — you’ll soon be back to normal in terms of comfort and function.

Tips that help:

  • Start with softer foods and small bites.

  • Wear your dentures most of the day at first to accelerate adaptation.

  • Practice speaking and smile in the mirror.

  • Let us know of any sore spots — we’ll happily make any necessary adjustments for you.

Caring for Your Dentures & Mouth

Good care means your dentures (and mouth) stay in great shape for as long as possible. We’ll provide you with clear, simple instructions, but here are the basics:

  • Rinse your dentures (and your mouth out) after meals.

  • Brush them daily with a non-abrasive denture brush.

  • Soak them in a denture-cleaning solution (following manufacturer’s instructions).

  • It’s best to leave your dentures soaking in water overnight to allow your gums time to breathe

  • Maintain regular check-ups and hygiene visits at our practice so we can monitor your dentures and your overall mouth health.

  • If you notice anything unusual (looseness, sore spots, changes in the fit) call us — early adjustments make a big difference.

  • A team that truly takes your comfort and long-term health as its primary goal.
