Gum Health & Hygiene Care at The Dentists of Didsbury

GUM HEALTH

Your gums are the foundation of your smile — and looking after them means looking after your mouth health in the longer term. At The Dentists of Didsbury, we’re here to help you maintain healthy gums in our relaxed, patient-centred environment.

What Is Periodontal (Gum) Health?

Periodontal means the tissues around the tooth, i.e. the gums, the bone and the ligaments that support your teeth. When all these parts are healthy, your teeth feel strong and healthy.

But if your gums are feeling sore or look bright red and inflamed from bacteria build up along the gumline, you may be developing gum problems.

We usually talk about two stages

Gingivitis

The early stage. You might notice bleeding gums when brushing, or your gums being red or tender. This stage is often reversible with good care.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is left untreated, the inflammation can progress deeper, affecting bone and supporting structures – this is not reversible and can lead to the loss of teeth. That’s why early detection is so important.

Signs your gums may need some attention

You don’t have to wait until something hurts — here are some warning signs to keep an eye on:

If you’ve noticed one or more of these, don’t worry — we see it all the time, and the sooner we catch it, the more straightforward the treatment tends to be.

Bleeding when brushing or cleaning between your teeth

Gums that are red, swollen or feel sore

Gums pulling away (receding) from your teeth (making your teeth look longer)

Persistent bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth

Teeth feeling looser or shifting in their position

How we can help you at The Dentists of Didsbury

Here at The Dentists of Didsbury, we combine our professional expertise with a genuinely caring approach to support your gum health. Your care plan will be personalised — we’ll explain everything clearly, answer your questions, and you’ll never feel rushed or pressured. That’s part of our ethos.

Typical ways we can help include:

  • Advice and coaching on how you brush and clean between your teeth — we’ll show you options and techniques that will work for you, not one-size-fits-all.

  • A professional cleaning (scale & polish) to remove plaque and tartar above and below the gum-line.

  • Deep cleaning when needed, to smooth the tooth roots and help resolve gum pocketing.

  • Scheduled follow-up hygiene visits and assessments to keep everything on track for the long term.

We believe prevention is better than cure — and by helping you to keep your gums healthy is a key to how we do this.
