CUPPING THERAPY · DIDSBURY | MANCHESTER
wet cupping, is a traditional therapy that has been practised for centuries to support circulation, muscle recovery, relaxation and general wellbeing. At The Dentists of Didsbury, every Wet cupping session includes a cupping massage, is performed in a fully clinical, hygienic environment by a trained practitioner, and concludes with complimentary LED light therapy all within one hour.
Whether you're managing ongoing tension or muscle soreness, or you're an active athlete looking to support recovery and keep your body performing at its best, wet cupping is a therapy that fits a wide range of goals from targeted relief to general physical maintenance.
What Is Wet Cupping Therapy?
wet cupping in which small, controlled incisions are made on the skin before suction cups are applied to draw out a small amount of blood. It is one of the oldest documented therapeutic practices, used historically across many cultures to support the body's natural circulation and promote a sense of balance and wellbeing.
Unlike dry cupping, which uses suction alone, wet cupping combines suction with a minor, controlled skin incision which is why it should only ever be carried out by a trained practitioner, in a properly hygienic clinical setting, using sterile, single-use equipment.
At The Dentists of Didsbury, wet cupping is carried out with the same standard of hygiene and care you'd expect from a registered dental and medical practice not a home visit or a pop-up setting. Every session uses fresh, disposable cupping equipment for each patient, and includes a cupping massage to work through the muscles before and after the wet cupping itself.

This combination is why the treatment appeals to two very different kinds of patient. For those managing muscle tension, stiffness or general aches, it offers hands-on, targeted relief. For athletes and gym-goers focused on performance and recovery, the cupping massage component supports the same muscle recovery principles seen in sports cupping the kind used by many professional athletes as part of a regular training routine
Important note: Hijama is a traditional and complementary therapy. It is not a substitute for medical diagnosis or treatment, and it does not cure or treat any medical condition. If you have a diagnosed health condition, please discuss this with your GP or specialist before booking.
How Our Cupping Session Works Step By Step
01
Consultation
Before any treatment, we talk through your general health, any medications you're taking (particularly blood thinners), and confirm you're a suitable candidate for the session.
02
Preparation
The treatment area is cleaned and prepared, and sterile, single-use cups and blades are set out for your session.
03
Cupping Massage
Cups are moved across the muscles using a gliding technique, working through areas of tension or tightness similar in principle to the sports cupping used by many athletes as part of their recovery routine.
04
Dry Cupping
Cups are then applied to the skin using suction, without any incision, to increase local blood flow and prepare the area.
05
Wet Cupping (Hijama)
The cups are briefly removed, small controlled incisions are made in the skin, and the cups are reapplied to draw out a small amount of blood. This part of the treatment typically lasts a few minutes per area.
06
Aftercare Cleaning & Dressing
The treated area is thoroughly cleaned and dressed, with clear aftercare instructions provided.
07
LED Light Therapy
Every session concludes with 10 minutes of LED light therapy, applied to support the skin's natural recovery process after cupping.
A full appointment takes approximately one hour, including consultation, cupping massage, wet cupping and LED therapy.

Why We Include LED Light Therapy
Most Hijama providers finish the session once the cups come off. We include 10 minutes of LED light therapy in every appointment, because it's designed to support the skin in the period immediately after cupping — when it benefits most from encouragement to recover.
LED light therapy uses specific wavelengths of light to support the skin's natural processes, and is widely used as a gentle, non-invasive add-on after skin treatments. Including it as standard means you leave your appointment having had a complete, considered treatment — not just the cupping on its own.
Wet Cupping (Hijama) For Athletes & Active Lifestyles
South Manchester has no shortage of people training seriously — whether that's the gym, football, running, or general fitness — and Hijama has a natural place in that routine.
The cupping massage element of our session works on the same muscles that get tight and overworked from regular training: shoulders, back, hamstrings and calves. It's commonly used by athletes to help manage muscle tightness and support recovery between sessions, in much the same way as sports massage or foam rolling — just with a longer history behind it.
You don't need an injury or a health complaint to benefit. Many of our fitness-focused patients book Hijama as a regular part of their routine — every few weeks — purely to support recovery and keep their body feeling loose and well-maintained, alongside their training.

What To Expect After Your Session
It's common to see small, temporary marks or mild bruising at the cupping sites, which generally fade within a week to ten days. Some people feel immediately relaxed after a session, while mild tiredness on the day itself is also normal.
We'll give you clear aftercare guidance before you leave including keeping the area clean and avoiding strenuous exercise for the rest of the day.

Hygiene & Safety
Because Hijama involves a minor skin incision, hygiene standards matter more here than with most complementary therapies. At The Dentists of Didsbury:
All cups, blades and related equipment are single-use and disposed of after every patient
Treatment is carried out in a proper clinical setting, not a home or mobile setup
Your practitioner is trained in safe Hijama practice and infection control
A short health consultation is carried out before every first session
