Do I Really Need to See the Hygienist for a Teeth Cleaning?

It’s a question we’re often asked and in one variation or another, here at The Dentists of Didsbury:

“My teeth feel fine—do I really need to have them cleaned / have a scale and polish / see the hygienist?”

Short answer? Yes. Longer answer? Still yes—because a professional teeth cleaning isn’t just a quick teeth cleaning. Your gums are the foundations of your teeth, healthy foundations mean solid healthy teeth that would otherwise loosen and, worst case scenario, fall out!  Not to mention the tonnes of scientific evidence proving the link between gum health and whole-body health.

So, here’s why that quick visit to your hygienist is more important than you might first think:

Your Toothbrush Can’t Do It All

You might have an amazing technique; an electric toothbrush that claims it’ll make it so that your teeth are so clean you can see your own reflection in them(!); and use those interdental cleaning aids like they’re going out of fashion, but even the best home routines miss a few spots... Over time, that soft plaque hardens into tartar, and no amount of brushing will shift that.

That’s where your hygienist comes in—they’ve got the tools (and the skills) to give your teeth a proper, thorough and effective clean.

A visit to the hygienist helps:

·       Remove plaque and tartar you can’t get rid of at home - not even those “professional scalers” you see advertised on social media!

  • Prevent gum disease, which often starts silently

  • Brighten your smile by getting rid of surface stains

  • Spot early signs of trouble (like cavities or inflammation) before they become bigger problems

  • Manage existing gum disease to prevent losing your teeth prematurely

  • Screen for more sinister things like “the big C” and refer for specialist intervention early

How Often Should You Book In?

Most people do well with a visit every six months, but if you have gum issues, wear braces, or just want to keep your smile looking it’s best, we might recommend coming in every three months instead.

Not sure what’s best for you? Just ask—we’ll always offer you a plan to tailor things to your needs.

What Happens at a Teeth Cleaning Appointment?

Anxious about taking the first step? Don’t worry, we’ve got you... Here at The Dentists of Didsbury, it’s no ordinary hygienist visit… Here’s what to expect:

  • You’ll get a 30-45minute visit with our super experienced and doubly qualified dental therapist / hygienist

  • He’ll do a check on your teeth and gums

  • You’ll get a good clean to freshen up, remove plaque and tartar leaving your mouth feeling squeaky clean and looking fab

  • Some personalised advice to help you keep things shipshape at home

  • A little goody bag with some money off vouchers and samples 😊

“But I Don’t Have Any Problems…”

That’s the point of coming in regularly—to keep it that way!

Gum disease, in particular, can sneak up without symptoms. Regular visits help us to pick up on red flags early, meaning you’ll avoid the need for complex (and expensive) treatments later.
