Pregnancy Gingivitis

By | The DoD, The Kiddie Clinic | No Comments

Exciting times here at The Dentists of Didsbury, as we can now announce our gorgeous Dental nurse Sam, is soon to be a yummy mummy.

Sam is expecting her first little bundle of joy later this year and we couldn’t be happier for her & her Hubby!!

Whilst we can sit back and admire her growing bump, Sam (like many other expecting women) is beginning to experience the pregnancy downsides, one of which being “Pregnancy Gingivitis”.

Blog inspiration for this week …

What is Pregnancy Gingivitis?

A mild form of gum disease.

About half of mums-to-be will suffer with swollen, red, tender gums that bleed when flossed or brushed.

Why does this happen?

Hormonal changes can make your gums  more sensitive to the bacteria in plaque.

Does it hurt?

Yes, it can be extremely uncomfortable and can worsen if not treated right away.

How long will it last?

If treated right away, pregnancy gingivitis should only last the duration of your pregnancy and in some cases a little while after. However, if you don’t treat the problem straight away (a reversible problem) – it can advance into periodontitis. This will harm not only your gums but also the bone supporting your teeth (irreversible damage).

How can I treat Pregnancy Gingivitis?

You should visit your dentist ASAP if you show signs of pregnancy gingivitis. Your Dentist/Hygienist, will be able to guide you through prevention and intense cleaning to combat against the problem. Continue to Brush & Floss as normal even whilst the gums bleed.

National Smile Month

By | The DoD, The Kiddie Clinic | No Comments

National Smile Month is the UK’s largest campaign to promote

Good Oral Health!!

Together, with thousands of individuals and organisations, National Smile Month helps to deliver three key messages…

They are:

  • Brush your teeth twice per day – last thing at night and on at least one other occasion with a fluoride toothpaste (E.g.Colgate Total)
  • Cut down on how often you have sugary foods and drinks (It’s not quantity its Frequency)
  • Visit your dentist regularly, as often as they recommend (We like to see our patients every 3-6 months)
The Organisation
The aim of National Smile Month is to ultimately improve the UK’s oral health.

Organised by oral health charity, the Oral Health Foundation, this campaign helps raise awareness of important health issues and to make a positive difference to the oral health of millions.

So why not GET INVOLVED !!

Me and the team are not only promoting “National Smile Month” at the practice but we have also entered into the “Smileathon” .

What is the SMILEATHON ??

The aim is to snap as many selfies throughout the day with a “Smiley” and post on social media

via Instagram, Twitter, facebook

Simply @smilemonth into the caption and hashtag #mysmileyselfie  & #smileathon

The BEST photos will be published into the charities awareness booklets throughout the UK

So gather up a few friends, family members or the work team and join in the fun.

Summer is almost upon us and everyone is getting ready to look their BEST for all of the “summertime fun that lies ahead. Invisalign- Clear Braces…

This bank holiday weekend has just got better with a huge £500 discount off

What is Invisalign?

Invisalign is the clear, comfortable & nearly invisible way to straighten teeth using aligners. The future of teeth straightening is here.

What is an “Aligner”?

Aligners (a prettier/slimmer version of a mouth guard) are a custom made removable appliance. This means throughout your treatment, you can straighten your teeth without anyone even knowing. (Did you know Justin Bieber wears them)

Will it hurt?

Invisalign can be slightly uncomfortable the first time you wear the aligners. This is due to the mouth adjusting to a foreign body and the teeth being manipulated into the correct position; therefore this causes the discomfort. (Think of the first time you wear those lovely new shoes that haven’t moulded to your foot just yet).

How long will it take?

Each case of treatment is different for each individual. At your consultation your dentist will give you a time frame for completion of your treatment. (On average Invisalign can take between 3-18 months)

Can I still eat as normal?

Yes you can eat and drink as normal. Just as long as you remove the aligners before doing so. (You can drink water with your aligners in place).

How long do I have to wear an aligner?

For optimal results, 20-22 hrs per day wear time is what we suggest. With the aligners being custom made to fit your mouth comfortably, this time frame should not be an issue for anyone.

Baby Teeth DO Matter

Baby Teeth DO matter !

Myself, like many others around the world embraced our inner child/princess this month and joined thousands of excited children (and adults) at the cinema, to watch the long anticipated remake of

Beauty & The Beast

Me and my sister decided to take my mum for mothers day, as it is her favourite Disney film of all time. Upon entering the cinema, I was well and truly taken back to my childhood. Little girls dressed as Belle (My Fancy Dress costume at primary school) all of the little boys pretending to not be excited to see a “Girlie” movie and better yet, fathers trying to hide the excitement and of course all of the mothers reliving a magical moment from their past, it was simply lovely.

Now I have been told and I am not ashamed to admit, that I am a big softy! The minute the movie began, my mascara had no chance of survival; tears of joy, laughter and even a little fear at certain points, were streaming down my face and then the “Song” came on. . .

Tale As Old As Time !!!

Easily the BEST scene of the entire movie, everyone captivated by the dress, fully engrossed in the moment and a little girl sat besides my mum starts screaming!!Crying her little eyes out and complaining of pain from her mouth. She had consumed an entire box of popcorn, a large Coca Cola and was currently in the middle of a bag of Jelly snakes . . . I think the pain speaks for itself.

I completely understand children wanting treats whilst out and about and especially in the cinema, however a box full of sugar doesn’t necessary have to be the “Go To” in order to fulfil the need.

Safe snacks can still be yummy snacks

So due to the interruption I was inspired to write this blog

Baby Teeth DO matter !

Are baby teeth important ??

Many people think baby teeth don’t matter because they’ll eventually fall out. The truth is baby teeth DO matter. Baby teeth, otherwise referred to as the 1st or primary teeth, are very important to a child’s development.

But new ones will grow ??

Yes this is correct, however the health of the “Baby” teeth are key to early development. They help:

  • Foster good nutrition through proper chewing
  • Aid in speech development
  • Enable a child to pay attention and learn in school without the distraction of dental pain
  • Save space in the jaw that is needed for proper development of adult (permanent) teeth

How many times should kids brush ??

2x per day – Morning and Night (Night time brushing is key)

For children under the age of 10yrs we always recommend brushing to be done or at least supervised by an adult.

Baby paste or adult paste??

Adult toothpaste – the entire family can use Colgate total. Children’s toothpaste doesn’t always have the correct quantity of fluoride therefore adult paste is best. (just a smear).

What is a safe snack ??

Carrot sticks, Cheese, Apples, Nuts, Sliced meats, Bagels, Pears etc.

(anything not containing sugar)

When should my little one see a Dentist ??

As soon as the first tooth starts to break through (Erupt). The dentist can be a scary place for anyone so getting your child used to the environment from an early age will help prevent fear in the future.

What is the point in a photographer if there isn’t a picture perfect you.

Five Top Tips for all Brides (& Grooms) on how to get that Fresh-Faced look in time for the BIG Day !

Whether you’re a regular or a virgin most have considered BOTOX before their wedding day. If you’re a regular to the treatment then our tip to you is say “I Do” to BOTOX two weeks before your big day. This will ensure your Fresh-Faced look is at its optimal result just in time. If you’re a BOTOX virgin. Our tip to you is to say “I Don’t” anything less than six weeks before your special day; due to each individuals face; swelling and bruising are a common side effect to any BOTOX treatment. So for first timers always book way in advance for any facial aesthetic treatment.

Dermal Fillers

Just like BOTOX, most have considered them fuller, plumper lips for the “You may kiss the Bride” moment to. Regulars, our tip to you is to say “I Do” to Fillers two weeks before the wedding.  Filler virgins, our tip to you is to say “I Don’t” anything less than five weeks before your wedding day.  Reactions and swelling are a common side effect to any Dermal Filler treatment; so for first timers always book way in advance.

Brides & BOTOX

By | Cosmetic Dentistry, The DoD, Zoom Whitening | No Comments

So, last weekend me and some of the girls decided we wanted to get out of Manchester for the night; we packed a bag, filled up the car and headed off for a night on the town in Liverpool.

We planned the trip as a single girls “we don’t need a man” type of adventure and just when we thought all of our “singleton” worries were behind us, we arrived at the hotel . . .

Only to find that they were hosting a WEDDING FAYRE !!

A hotel filled with brides to be, maids of honour, wedding planners and everything else that goes with it.

I honestly felt like I was in a nightmare!

However, after a mini melt down and a few glasses of Prosecco (bottle) – just for a laugh we decided to get in on the fun and pretend we were all newly engaged ladies on the hunt to find everything for our perfect day.

I still to this very minute am in shock to how much prep goes into a wedding!

From venue, themes, colour palates, flower arrangements, to the length of the veil, material of the dress; all the way to the perfect FACE. . .

Yes that is correct the FACE !!

Apparently, wedding season is no1 on the list of peak times for BOTOX.

Brides want to look flawless, picture perfect for the “most important day of their lives” and BOTOX is the safe haven they can rely on to do exactly that.

So it got me thinking . . .

Our practice quite literally provides everything that the face requires for that big day

Fresh Faced Treatments

The most common form of anti-wrinkle treatment. An injection of the botulinum toxin type A (the real stuff) that reduces wrinkles, making them appear more shallow. From the forehead, frown lines, crow’s feet, to correcting a gummy smile by lowering the upper lip.

It’s been around for decades and rest assured that it is safe.

Pain-free, lasts from 3 to 6 months, noticeably visible effects after 2 to 5 days, optimum result after just 2 weeks

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers give a more natural wrinkle-free appearance as they plump out and smooth the skin. A hyaluronic acid-based product (all natural) so it is compatible with the body.

Almost immediate effects and depending on the filler type, can last for 6 to 9 months or up to 2 years!!

Lip Fillers

Dermal fillers can also be used to add volume to the lips for a subtle enhancement.

Think more Kylie Jenner and less Leslie Ashe !!

Not quite ready for BOTOX? Our MENE & MOY anti-ageing products can help to achieve a more radiant fresher face without any injections at all.

All treatments are relatively quick and pain free as we can use local anaesthetic cream or injections to numb the areas to be treated

And let’s not forget – BOTOX isn’t just for us women . . . Men also want that youthful fresher look to

 P.S. ~ A perfect face isn’t complete without a diamond white smile
